Prediction: Next “Halo” to be MMPORG?

According to this post over at, Bungie is hard at work developing the next game in the Halo series:

“Speaking with Bungie at an exclusive Microsoft event this month we were informed that there was no rest for the wicked for the team as they were already beavering away at the next Halo game in the franchise. When questioned whether the game would be a prequel, Bungie remained tight lipped as always but we have a hunch that the game might actually be Halo – The Movie Game (insert movie title prefix here). Either way, it’s early days considering many are still tackling the single player of Halo 3. With huge sales across the globe for the series, there’s no doubt that gamers are in store for more fighting whatever the guise may be.”

Well, here is my prediction. While Ensemble Studios is creating Halo Wars, an RTS action game that takes place before the first Halo game, my bet is that Bungie is hard at work creating World of Halo….much like WoW except with the Halo story. Why do I think this? Well, in the Warcraft Series, there where 3 games, and then the Frozen Throne expansion. Now we have Halo 1-3, Halo Wars, the next logical thing for a pay as you go service such as Live, is to get those 5 million gamers who play Halo 3 hooked on an even bigger game, with an even bigger storyline and never ending battles.

Another reason is that Halo 2 was released 11/9/2004. Halo 3 was released 9/25/2007. That seems like a long time to develop what we know as Halo 3. You would think with that much time, and not much difference between Halo 2 and 3 (some are calling Halo 3 “Halo 2.5”), that maybe Bungie has been working on more than 1 Halo game in the past 3 years.

Last I checked, WoW had somewhere between 6 and 7 million subscribers, each paying $15-$20 a month to play (its been a while since i cancelled my sub). Microsoft could easily charge 2000 gamerpoints per month to play World of Halo, even to the point where if you play it enough and get enough achievements, you could hypothetically play for free. This is all conjecture of course, but what else could Bungie be working on? We were told that this was it, Halo 3 was the last in the series……but maybe not the end?

p.s. I don’t think Bungie would release a Halo game to coincide with whatever movie Peter Jackson is making…I could see the devs talking over coffee now: “Hey lets ruin our game dev career by making another Halo game based on a movie..that always works out good…”
