News that smells funny – Sony Begs for 3rd party devs?

fanboyNow, this is just getting ridiculous. This “news” story over at gamepro (insert the letter “y” where applicable) claims this:

“One piece of news that came out this week was that Sony pleaded with third-party developers not to abandon its struggling [PS3] platform,” wrote Dean Takahashi of the San Jose Mercury News. “That change in attitude is a marked difference compared to the arrogance of past years,” the game journalist added. “The argument is that the PS3 will show its strength as developers learn how to make games for it.” Takahashi cited “insider information” when contacted by GamePro for source clarification.

Just wow. So a friend told a friend told his buddy told a cousin told a police officer told a journalist that Sony is begging, pleading, for 3rd party support. Is this what we should be basing news on? “Insider Information” with no name, no face, no trackback, nothing. Just a blank check to claim whatever you want. Unreal.

Let me just paint a picture for all the fanboys out there. All the posters singing the death knell for the ps3 at the end of that article. DO YOU REALLY WANT MS (or anyone) TO HAVE A MONOPOLY IN THE CONSOLE MARKET? Do you really want Sony to throw in the towel, and have only the xbox 360 to play “next gen” games on? Let’s look at what would happen if Sony and Nintendo came out with press releases tomorrow saying they are pulling out of the console business for good.

First, Microsoft would finally be expecting to turn a profit on the home entertainment division, particularly the portion that’s been in the red since the inception of the Xbox. That is what is most important to them. If you think that when the ps3/wii is out of the way, it’s going to open the floodgates to gaming heaven, you are wrong. Yes, 3rd party dev’s would have no choice but to publish their games on the 360.

But guess what? Now there will be an overabundance of games. So many games that consumers won’t be able to choose what to buy, and only the over-hyped, AAA titles will be purchased in mass quantity, leaving less publicized good games to rot on the shelves of stores. 3rd parties will go back to publishing only on the pc, since the console market will be totally flooded with games.

Then there is the issue of quality. Remember how Vista comes in 5 or 6 different versions? Just wait till MS dices up the next console accordingly (not that they haven’t already done that this gen). There will be 6 different SKU’s, all with absurdly high priced accessories you will need along with them, no matter which SKU you buy (kinda like now, but worse). And if you think the RROD is bad now, just wait until they have no competition, and they have your dollar no matter what. Remember Windows 95? Windows 98? Windows ME? Riiiiiiight……

Bungie left MS for a reason. Several developers have broken ties with Microsoft, and from what i have read on the net (not that it holds water), is that dealing with Microsoft is like dealing with the devil. They will take your soul. And if the talking heads, fanboys, and the blogosphere can’t see that there is a subliminal bias against the ps3, with everyone hoping it to fail, maybe it just might. And if it does, this, and possibly many generations of gamers, will regret it for a very, very long time….

Microsoft will never make a killer, super stable, crash-proof operating system, because then you the consumer won’t need to give them any more money. What are the chances they will make a console that’s built for the long haul, like the ps3? Competition is what drives quality up and price down. Where I live, I only have 1 choice for phone, electric, internet, and satellite service. Guess what? the quality is bad and the price is high.

the eyeI own both systems, and I am happy. But if Sony or Nintendo bow out of the race, it will be a very, very sad day for the modern gamer. And at that time, the dark wizard will awaken, and the red eye (ring) of death will cast its gaze upon every gamer, searching for the one green ring…and when it is found, and all hope is lost, who will save us?

  2. I think the reason so many people are licking their chops in anticipation for PS3’s demise is because Sony was just so damn arrogant with the PS2. Personally, I don’t have too much beef with Sony, and while I think it’s funny that they’ve been getting whupped lately by Nintendo (and M$, in some cases), I still want them to do well. After all, like you said, it’s good to have competition in the industry. I know for a fact that I would be awfully depressed if, for example, the only portable on the market was the DS. I really don’t dig a lot of the games for that system, which is why I’m SO happy that the PSP exists. Likewise, I’m happy the PS3 exists because it offers something different from what M$ gives us. MGS4 and FFXIII are two of the reasons I’ll eventually be picking up Sony’s latest console.

Also, competition is great because it makes companies drop the prices of their products. $500 for the 80GB PS3? That announcement definitely got my attention. 🙂

  3. thanks for the post halol. ive been hearing about sony’s arrogance with the ps2 and since i wanst around for that (i never owned a ps2 lol…only xbox) i really dont know what they did or how they did it.

but to say that sony has been arrogant and ms hasnt would be silly too. ms is one of the most arrogant companies around. thier arrogance made way for google to basically outdo them in every way, and now ms copies whatever they can (msn live, livesearch, virtualearth, etc).

i guess i just dont see the whole arrogance argument. everyone is arrogant: sports figures, politicians, actors, actresses, models, military generals, rich people, you name it….i think there are plenty of people who deserve a “demise” for thier arroganec before sony does…

  4. I would like to see a continuation of the topic
